The GCAEN has the honor to invite you to our first Capoeira Angola retreat.
Grupo De Capoeira Angola Estrela Do Norte Capoeira Retreat 2016.
Friday June 3rd, Saturday June 4th, and Sunday June 5th.
Plan on arriving Friday June 3rd around 4:00 pm to register and get settled in. Friday evening will celebrate with an opening Roda. Dinner afterwards, and a campfire for socializing.
Saturday starts off with breakfast, workshops until lunch, Then more workshops after lunch until our group Roda, and dinner and campfire afterwards. Sunday culminates with breakfast, select workshops and a closing celebration Roda. We plan to wrap up by 4 pm Sunday.

Mestre Deraldo Ferreira (Academia De Capoeira Angola Do
Mestre Joao Pequeno De Pastinha-Boston)
Founder of the Brazilian Cultural Center of New England, Mestre Deraldo began studying Capoeira at the age of 14. He founded the Academy of Capoeira in his hometown of Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, and he became a certified Mestre of Capoeira in 1984. Deraldo studied Capoeira Angola with Grand Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha, student of Grand Mestre Pastinha, the “father and protector of capoeira” from an early age in Brazil. Grand Mestre João Pequeno graduated Deraldo as a master of Capoeira Angola in 2004.
Mestre Grande (Grupo De Capoeira Angola Filhos De Dunga- New York)
I was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. I started practicing Capoeira in December 1983, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. My first Master/teacher was Grão Mestre Dunga, president of "Associação de Capoeira Cordão de Ouro Eu Bahia - A Senzala". I received my certificate of Capoeira Professor in June, 1997. I practiced Capoeira at “Associação de Capoeira Cordão de Ouro Eu Bahia - A Senzala” for 14 years. I started practicing Capoeira Angola in December, 1996 with Master João Bosco at Grupo de Capoeira Angola “Eu Sou Angoleiro…” in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. I moved to the United States of America in April, 1998. Since then I have been practicing Capoeira Angola with Grand Master João Grande.
Contra-Mestre Nathan "Toca" Throop ( Academia Do Mestre Joao Pequeno De Pastinha Boston)
Contra-Mestre Baba Jan (FICA-Maryland)
Livaldi “BabaJan” da Cruz was born and raised in Massarunduba, in the Lower City of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He has been training Capoeira Angola for 25 years and involved in music for 19 years. Baba began to practice Capoeira at the age of 10 with GCAP through the Project “Ginga Moleque” with Mestre Valmir and Mestre Poloca sponsored by Uniao E Conscience Negra. He trained with Mestre Moraes and Mestre Cobra Mansa. In 2000 Baba entered FICA Bahia as a senior student of Mestre Valmir. In 2003 Baba was invited to come from Brazil to Washington DC to be the director of a residency program at Kamit Institute for Magnificent Achievers (KIMA) public charter school. There, using Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian music, he developed a unique program of physical education and music studies for high school and middle school students. At this time Baba also became one of the leaders of FICA DC and founded the Samba Reggae group Samba Trovão.
In 2013 Baba started his own chapter of FICA in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Treinel Daniel (FICA-Oakland)
Daniel Mattar is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he was introduced to capoeira in 1994. In 1999 he began to train intensively with Mestre Marrom. In 2002, Daniel moved to California and joined the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF). Together with Contra Mestre Rogerio, Daniel helped to build the two spaces for capoeira angola in West Oakland. In 2007 Daniel received the title of Treinel in Rio de Janeiro, during the annual ICAF conference. Daniel is the leader of the ICAF Oakland group.
